The Week Just Passed: Congress Races to Finish its Term (Paper)

The Fiscal Cliff Isn’t a Cliff

Ignore the talk of a “fiscal cliff.” It’s not true. That phrase—fiscal cliff—suggests that the fiscal status of the government will go off a cliff, debt increasing dramatically, which would be bad. What’s actually go...

What does "middle class tax" have to do with FAA. This is an earmark in my book.

THIS 111th Congress can't be trusted with anything . The midterm elections confirmed that. Yet they continue to try to sneak their disasterous agenda throgh anyway.

ALL bills, except for vitally important ones, ie. funding the Govt, SHOULD be left for the next Congress to take office. THEN once the new Congress is there, they need to get the bill passed that states Lame Duck members have a very limited time to vacate Congress after they're voted out of office.

That will stop these underhanded maneuvers from Lame Duck Congresses, once and for all !

(logged-in user) December 6, 2010, 12:20pm (report abuse)

*additionally, when the current rules regarding when the new Congress took over was set for January, it was because incoming members had to travel, sometimes long distances, often by stagecoach, to reach DC. THAT is NOT the case anymore.

Considering the impact this will have on the Federal debt, I would vote against this. We need a combination of new revenue and reduced spending, you can't just cut your way out of this. Dear Federal government, keep my two bucks.

I just can not get over it, I must be stupid. Why do we have to roll a bunch of things into one bill? They get paid to handle the legislation for the country, not to sneak in their back pocket payoff deals with another item that has nothing to do with it. Damn Crooks anyway!!!!!!!!!!!. They need to get off of their a@#$%^ and do the job that they have and SERVE us as they are elected to do.

December 6, 2010, 2:01pm (report abuse)

Instead of their piecemeal solutions to taxes, they ought to repeal the federal income tax and design a new system that is simple, fair and doesn't need thousands of federal employees to administer.

Now that would be true fiscal, social, and economic reform WE CAN BELIEVE IN.

This is an absolute shame there are millions and millions of unemployed through no fault with no living jobs in sight and no lifeline. Yet the new exhausted few gets in this Bill while others have had this issue for months. It must be a job issue. Wake UP! Now they forget the Cola for seniors. This is a shame the whole congress needs to go giving rich breaks while people are loosing homes because they have to choose to eat or pay rent on the poverty jobs offered while we pay taxes and fund over 200,000 checks, vacations etc.

I feel the Republicans did not understand the vote of Nov 2nd, because they have given in one key issue. Limiting the tax situation to just two years means that businesses still can not plan for the future.Only Obama reaps the benefit of this short term money in the hands of people

Ummm, when I look at the title it says H.R. 4853. That indicates to me that the bill originated in the House of Representatives. Often times these bills get passed back and forth several times before they are finalized.

Omnibus Spending Bill Loaded with Earmarks and New Spending

The Senate is about to vote on an Omnibus Spending Bill funding the federal government for the year. House and Senate appropriators crafted a bill in secret and, just yesterday, provided text to Senators and the American people. The bill is 1,924 pages long and it will cost you $1.25 trillion, including $8 billion in earmarks. This appropriations measure is loaded with pork barrel projects, ObamaCare spending and other items on the liberal wish list.

Our Federal/Local Tax Systems are completely out of control. Both from complexity and from equality of payment versus benefit. From information gleaned at the Tax Foundation, the number of nonpaying household and individual tax filers ballooned from 23.8 million in 1990 to 32.5 million by 2000, a 36 percent increase versus only a 13 percent growth in total tax returns. By 2004, the number of nonpaying filers increased by another 32 percent with the full impact of the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child-Tax Credit. The explosion continued and reached 52 million in 2008, 19 million more than the number of non-payers in 2000 when President Clinton left office. Folks that represents a 58.6 percent increase in the number of non-payers in less than a decade way surpassing the taxable unit growth rate.

This situation did not suddenly occur. It was planned and nothing more than pure and simple Wealth Redistribution or Vote Buying - you pick the one you think fits best.

My Solution to Lame Ducks:

A simple solution to the problem Nationally would be to hold elections and ratify the results the final two weeks in December with all elected members being seated on January 1st following the election. Concurrently, changes to the authority governing sessions, duties, etc, should prohibit Congress from taking a recess in excess of three days so long as there are unresolved regular appropriation bills or continuing appropriations for funding federal agencies whose regular appropriations bills have not been enacted. In other words, make them work 2080 hours per year, earn their salaries, do what they were elected for and stop the government paid vacation most are embarked upon.

In a complicit act of pure evil and propaganda, every single member, without exception, of the mainstream press keeps reporting that the unemployment extension gives long term unemployed another thirteen more months. It is a complete lie. It is a media holocaust and it masks the massacre of seven million people and all their families.

Very few people will benefit from the thirteen month extension. The evident truth is that more people who are unemployed will not receive anything than the small percentage of people that will be eligible for this extension. The intellectual dishonesty that is transpiring one week before Christmas by President Barrack Obama and the US Congress is unconscionable.
