A safe and reliable method for landing and launching large, highly capable fixed-wing unmanned aerial systems (UAS) on ships would revolutionize unmanned aircraft capabilities for the Navy fleet and for Marine Corps Expeditionary Warfare. Current approaches to fixed-wing UAS recovery, mainly nets and dangling cables, are dangerous to crew, ship and the UAS itself, manpower-intensive, and non-scalable.
