S. 5 would improve the economy and security of the United States by reducing the dependence of the United States on foreign and unsustainable energy sources and the risks of global warming.
Detailed Summary
Cleaner, Greener, and Smarter Act of 2009 - Calls for the enactment of legislation to improve the economy and the security of the United States by reducing U.S. dependence on foreign and unsustainable energy sources and the risks of global warming by: (1) making and encouraging significant investments in green job creation and clean energy across the economy; (2) diversifying and rapidly expanding the use of secure, efficient, and environmentally friendly energy supplies and technologies; (3) transforming U.S. infrastructure to make the intrasturcture sustainable and the United States more competitive globally, including transmission grid modernization and transportation sector electrification; (4) requiring reductions in emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the United States and achieving reductions in emissions of GHGs abroad; (5) protecting consumers from volatile energy prices through better market oversight and enhanced energy efficiency standards and incentives; and (6) eliminating wasteful and unnecessary tax breaks and giveaways that fail to move the United States toward a more competitive and cleaner energy future.

January 21, 2009, 3:20pm (report abuse)Before we spend one dime related to global warming, I'd like to assert that the burden of proof is on the alarmists. I have two questions.
Where is the signature hot spot that should be in the tropics at an altitude of about 10km? How do you explain that temperatures have not warmed since 2001 despite steady increases in the level of CO2?
Please don't cloud the issue with ice or polar bears or consensus or tidal waves or hurricanes or mathematical models or other issues. Lots of things will happen (some good and some bad) if the earth warms. The issue is whether any significant amount of warming is due to human causes. The only proof that should matter to science is directly observable results that were predicted by a hypothesis.
The simplest guide to this I have found is at Joanne Nova's website,

April 3, 2009, 3:19pm (report abuse)Why have temratures warmed since 2001? Well it has accualy, just review the tempratures of 2005, or 2007, but let pretend that it has stayed the same temprature since 2001. The time period from 2001 to today, in relitive terms to the planet's responce time to atmospheric changes is like turning a heater on in an airplane hanger and wondering why its not warmer 0.01 seconds later. Do we want to be the dead frog floating in boiling water or the living frog who jumps out only to discover the water wasn't getting warmer after all. Anoter words, if we choose to respond to the non exsistance crisis of Global we would be wrong. But if we choose not to respond to the reality of global warming, we will be DEAD! better to error on the safe side.
