February 4, 2009, 10:28am (report abuse)The program will fail to achieve its goal of improving fuel efficiency and stimulating car sales, but will increase unemployment and the cost of used cars and parts.
Given the minimal $1,500& $4,500 voucher value, the program will lure rarely-driven second and third vehicles that have minimal impact on overall fuel economy and air pollution. This is not a wise investment of tax dollars.
The program will reduce the number of vehicles available for low-income individuals and drive up the cost of the remaining vehicles and repair parts. The program fails to acknowledge driver needs, such as the ability to transport a family, tow a trailer or rely upon the performance, safety and utility associated with the larger vehicles.
The program will hurt thousands of independent repair shops and their customers across the country that depend on the used car market. This industry provides thousands of American jobs and generates millions of dollars in local, state and federal tax revenues.

May 5, 2009, 1:21pm (report abuse)I would trade in my '95 pickup for a Subaru the same day this went into effect. An incentive like this is all I need. Right now, its financially wiser to keep the truck... this bill would change that.

(logged in user) June 3, 2009, 8:24pm (report abuse)And just what in the constitution gives congress the authority to give people the down payment moneys to buy a new car.
I for one do not want to finance this program with my tax dollars.

(logged in user) June 22, 2009, 12:03pm (report abuse)I live in rural America where public transportation is not easily available. I also live on an income that is near the FPL. If this bill is passed, and the market for used cars disappears and parts for used cars increases, what will people like myself do. We'll be without transportation. Try grocery shopping, getting to doctors, etc. when you are a senior citizen without the aid of a vehicle in a rural area. I paid taxes too. I need to be able to purchase older cars that can be reapaired reasonably.
