January 25, 2009, 9:08pm (report abuse)Antifreeze is sweet and attracts children and animals. It is almost always fatal if ingested - even a tsp. All States should have a bittering law.

January 26, 2009, 12:49pm (report abuse)It's estimated that 10,000 loved PETS are lost each year. Not to mention an estimated 3,400 human poisonings...20% are children under the age of 6. It's immoral that this goes on and we have to fight to make this change. We need to do the right thing.

January 27, 2009, 1:36pm (report abuse)I refuse to look at labels in the store to see if the antifreeze I'm purchasing already has a bittering agent in it -- Washington, please help? Legislate so that I don't have to read.

January 27, 2009, 7:53pm (report abuse)Unless this is going to somehow help the antifreeze perform its function better, this piece of legislation seems pointless. Don't want your pets or children getting into the antifreeze? Put the antifreeze somewhere that they can't get to it.

January 28, 2009, 1:18pm (report abuse)Mike, Antifreeze contains ethylene glycol which is sweet and poisonous. A tsp can kill. PEOPLE have been intentionally poisoned with it. Adding the bitterant would not effect the product. Animals have been intentionally poisoned with it.

January 28, 2009, 2:17pm (report abuse)Why have we not done this already? Sorry, Mike, but unfortunately there are people in the world who use this on purpose. You should open your mind a bit more.

The problem, Mike, is that antifreeze sometimes leaks from parked vehicles. Making it unpalatable for children and animals is worthwhile.

January 29, 2009, 12:49am (report abuse)I lost two dogs (AKC White German Shepherd and a German Rott) to anti-freeze poisoning due to someone else's (a neighbor's) negligence. This should have been done by the manufacturers to begin with!!

January 29, 2009, 1:59pm (report abuse)danny508: I drive a 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid.
Ann and Teresa: If people and animals have been intentionally poisoned by it, the problem is with the people doing the poisoning, not the poison itself.
Rita: This is a good argument. I still maintain that responsible parenting and pet-ownership would reduce this issue, but I could see where it would be a problem for wildlife.
Kathi: Hi, I'm Mike.
All: My concerns were, and are, merely whether personal responsibility would solve this situation, and whether the benefits justified the costs. If it is truly a high benefit to cost ratio, sounds good to me.
Rachel Riley
January 29, 2009, 4:25pm (report abuse)Crazy people who have a desire to kill another living being have no personal responsibility. At just 2 cents per gallon, it would be extremely beneficial and cost effective at the same time. Companies that do not dispose of their antifreeze and oils properly risk the chance of the rubbish making its way into our ground water and coming into our homes. Wildlife would suffer from it as well.

January 29, 2009, 4:44pm (report abuse)Mike/anyone who doesnt support this-Someone came onto my fenced in property and poisioned a litter of 12 8 month old kittens and the mother cat a while back and it had nothing to do with my being a responsible person/parent, we cant be with our children or pets 24/7 and even the most reliable babysitter makes mistakes.I threw away the rose colored glasses long ago.

January 29, 2009, 5:26pm (report abuse)I'm an animal lover, so count me in. If only something could be done about the people who would intentionally poison an innocent animal...but at least we can take away one of their weapons.

January 29, 2009, 9:52pm (report abuse)Mike: The teenager that got this bill going (and it passed in TN as a state law) had a dog that was intentionally poisened and killed by her neighbors. So, it wasn't a case of people irresponsibly leaving things lying around, but a case of people being cruel. People have been intenionally poisened with it as well.

January 30, 2009, 1:52am (report abuse)Haley is one of our heroes here at the Blount County Humane Society. We think her dedication to this issue is inspiring and shows her love for animals. As an Animal Cruelty Investigator I know that antifreeze poisoning is often an intentional act. Unethical people use a poison they can buy at the local auto parts store to kill pets and wildlife. Farmers have been known to use antifreeze to rid their land of Coyotes. The problem is that antifreeze is an indiscriminate killer and many different animals die as a result of these actions. This is a common sense legislation that needs to be passed into law. As an animal protection advocate my vote is for the Antifreeze Bittering Act to pass and become a law. Thank you Haley for championing this cause. We are all behind you. Keep up the good work.

January 30, 2009, 9:29am (report abuse)I support this bill, not only because my granddaughter is responsible for a similar bill passing in Tennessee but because it is the right thing to do.

January 30, 2009, 9:42am (report abuse)This is a very important bill that needs animal lovers' full support. Haley Ham worked to get it passed in TN as a model for the rest of the U.S. She knows firsthand the tragedy of losing pets to antifreeze poisoning!

January 30, 2009, 11:44pm (report abuse)Thank you Haley for all of your hard work. This definitely is an easy fix to save thousands of animals lives. It seems like the makers of antifreeze would JUST DO IT ALREADY to show a little care/concern to life.

February 1, 2009, 9:38pm (report abuse)IT IS A SHAME WE HAVE TO GO TO THIS EXTENT TO GET SOMETHING DONE BUT IT IS ALL TO COMMON TO LOSE ANIMALS IN THIS CRUEL AND HORRIFIC WAY. SOMETHING NEEDS TO DONE AS OF YESTARDAY. IT IS URGENT TO DO SOMETHING NOW TO SAVE THE PETS FROM THIS EVER HAPPENING AGAIN. WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING NOW BEFORE IT IS TO LATE. I HAVE A CAT HER NAME IS ASHLEY AND I WOULD BE DEVISTATED IF SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENED TO HER . SO PLEASE DO SOMETHING NOW. AND PLEASE DON'T JUST DO THIS FOR HOUSE PETS DO THIS FOR ALL THE ANMALS ON THE PLANET!!!!

February 2, 2009, 2:02pm (report abuse)This is a very important bill that should be supported. My cat was poisoned, probably just by someone accidentally spilling antifreeze while putting it in their car. He survived, but he was hospitalized for many days & it was very costly.

February 2, 2009, 5:39pm (report abuse)Such a small step that could save so many lives. I've heard so many horror stories. It's beyond time for this step. Thanks for all your hard work Haley, kudos!

February 2, 2009, 6:18pm (report abuse)This is to Mike whom so eloquently states that, if we don't want our children or pets getting into antifreeze then put it away. Perhaps we should tell the cars to stop leaking this substance too!
It's not so easy, mikey, to just put something away, especially something that is added to a vehicle which can either spill or leak!
There is nothing pointless about making a product less dangerous... especially if that product has been proven to be fatal!

February 4, 2009, 9:38am (report abuse)Mike: Unfortunatly, we can not depend on individuals being responsible. we have so many crisises with our animals today and mostly because we have relied on the public to be responsible with their pets. There are ALOT of humans lacking basic common sense. Adding the bittering agent will only increase the price by approx: 5 cents. We can not rely on the public to think for themselves these days, and if this will save a child or pets' life, I am all for it!

February 15, 2009, 2:55pm (report abuse)We so need this law.
Changes have to be made and can be made, I urge the law to be passed to make anti-freeze safe.
We owe this to childrena and animals and our own peace of minds to know we have done the right thing to make this world a safer place.
Well done for raising awarness

March 1, 2009, 10:35am (report abuse)If you're going to restrict the means by which farmers and homeowners keep their farms/children safe from Coyotes, then they're going to resort to alternative methods. You can't legislate all of them into illegality.

July 23, 2009, 3:52pm (report abuse)I just read an article in All Animals about 2 dogs eating antifreeze-laced biscuits (used as a squirrel deterrent - which is bad enough). It's heartbreaking - and frightening to me as a dedicated dog owner - to think that these dogs died through NO FAULT of the owner. This is such a simple thing - why NOT add the bittering agent. Lives of pets AND children could easily be saved. SHAME ON YOU if you vote against this bill.
Pamela Way
July 23, 2009, 3:56pm (report abuse)edited to add:
It was the dog owners neighbor who put out the laced biscuits. Speculationis that squirrels then carried the biscuits into the next door yard. They could have just as easily been picked up by children.

October 4, 2009, 11:37pm (report abuse)I support adding a bittering agent, but not sure the proposed product is the right one. Antifreeze manufactures want this bill to pass to prevent liability should the product cause environmental damage. I think a better choice is switching to propylene glycol, a much safer product for animals that already has a bad taste and is just as effective.

October 21, 2009, 7:44am (report abuse)Thank you Haley and all others who have given their time and hard work to be a voice for the animals. I just wish more kids and adults as well would get involved. This is such a small change with a huge impact. WELL DONE!!
