January 12, 2009, 10:00pm (report abuse)All law abiding gun owners MUST take a stand against this bill. This is a clear obstruction of our 2nd Amendment rights, and is a blatant effort to belabour further our citizenry with bureaucratic restrictions and requirements further increasing the size, cost and, worse, power of government.

January 12, 2009, 10:17pm (report abuse)This will take hundreds of millions of dollars to impelemnt. What is Rep Rush thinking? He needs to get his mind on the economy!

January 12, 2009, 11:33pm (report abuse)Anti-gun legislation does nothing to achieve it's "intended" purpose of reducing crime, it simply disarms law abiding citizens.

January 13, 2009, 2:55am (report abuse)It's named for a victim of gang bangers in Chicago who got a gun illegally despite the total ban, who used it illegally, thus proving that the laws do not work. It was introduced by a former Black Panther violent radical. The irony is rather painful, isn't it.
This would also trample states' rights, as many states have no registration at all for firearms purchase. It would invalidate the Constitution of several.
Nice to see the Democrats are, on the first day, being the same as they always have been. Cement their fiefdoms, disarm the peasants. Nothing has changed.

RKBA
January 13, 2009, 7:36am (report abuse)Does this stop the gangs, drug dealers, robbers, or murderers? No!
Thousands of banned guns enter this country from South America via gangs. Does this stop them? No!
We can't stop gangs like The MS-13 gang, one of the most violently dangerous gangs in the United States from getting guns.
The FBI says MS-13 is the fastest growing and most violent of the nation's street gangs.
The DOJ estimates: 30,000 gangs, 800,000 members, across the U.S. That would be 800,000 unregistered, banned guns!
Does this stop them? No!
The communities face daily exposure to violence, drug/weapons trafficking and gang fighting amongst themselves.
Do they register their banned guns? NO!
“A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”
As long as criminals are allowed get out of jail cards and gangs allowed to rule communities, the murders will continue!

January 13, 2009, 11:45am (report abuse)This bill is a clear violation of our 2nd amendment rights and a slap in the face to the U.S. Constitution.
I would expect a bill like this to come from Soviet Russia or Nazi Germany. Not from a U.S. Congressman.

January 13, 2009, 1:15pm (report abuse)This happens because the citizens let it, plain and simple. We have all stood by and watched things be gradually taken over more and more for decades. Now all of the sudden people are scared?! Wake up people, this isn't a condition that came to pass overnight. We must take a stand against bills like this and many others that our elected "representatives" would have us believe are for our own well being. We get treated as if we aren't capable of making choices that directly affect us every day. This bill is a great example. Who really wants this? Am I really to believe that the public as a whole is in favor of this? I highly doubt it, Yet we have to sit and worry that a measure like this could somehow pass. WHAT GIVES!
Leonidas1
January 13, 2009, 1:16pm (report abuse)This is appalling.
I am shocked that someone who claims to represent me could see this as Constitutional.
Really!!??
January 13, 2009, 1:17pm (report abuse)This will only serve to increase crime which is the opposite of its stated purpose. Time after time history proves that taking guns away from good citizens results in their victimization by criminals and government.

January 13, 2009, 2:10pm (report abuse)Coming to you from the anti gun utopia of Chicago, where police carry M4 carbines and citizens are disarmed, from Bobby Rush.
Isn't there a baseball team to be investigated? Money to steal? Lobbyists in waiting? A golf game?
Try concentrating on our Constitution, our highest law instead of the circumvention of that document. Shall not be infringed, pretty simple except to some window licking booger eating politician like Bobby Rush.
Taxes, fees, more taxes for rights over which our so called representatives have no say. People are tired of them. One day these mouth breathers will have a party and everyone will ignore them, as they should.
Shall not be infringed.
Read it again.

January 13, 2009, 3:37pm (report abuse)This is outrageous. This absolutely needs to be shot down before it becomes law. Our rights have been being whittled away in the name of public safety and national security for far too long. I will not be disarmed.

January 13, 2009, 3:53pm (report abuse)My ancestor stood against the best trained and equipped army in the world on a sunny April day in Concord Mass.
Why? In two words - gun control.
I have carried the colors for responsible gun ownership through education and editorial contributions, and felt like I was continuing his efforts in a spiritual sense. Now I worry that I may have to follow his footsteps in a more "hands-on" fashion.
As worried as I am about risks to my livelihood and life, I will take such a stand for my freedom, and the freedom of my children, grandchildren and my country. Which is probably the same reason he stood at the North Bridge.

January 13, 2009, 4:32pm (report abuse)This bill is foolish. It will NOT stop or lesson crime. Criminals will still continue to get ILLEGAL firearms. This will only punish lawful owners of firearms.

January 13, 2009, 5:03pm (report abuse)Hey, I've got an idea. Let's treat 2nd Amendment rights the same way they want to treat a 'right' that they wafted from penumbra of emanations.
If you want a firearm and can't afford one, the Federal Government will provide one at taxpayer expense.
You can get one every 10 months or so.
Minors can get one without parental consent or notification.
Isn't that fair?

January 13, 2009, 5:15pm (report abuse)The resistance is here. The resistance is now.
The "Shot Heard 'Round the World" was a result of the government attempting to seize law-abiding citizens' guns. The same thing may happen again. No, I'm not agitating for armed insurrection against a government of laws. I will resist a government that violates the Constitution of the United States since the Supreme Court has ruled that the Second Amendment protects, not grants, an individual right to keep and bear arms.

The problem with the recent Heller case is too many holes were left in it for interpretation and firearm regulation.
All the Gov has to say is, "a citizen has the right to own a single shot .22 rifle, so his right has not been infringed".
Many of us know how wrong this is, but look at how many people voted to bring anti-gun government upon us. Just give them a cold beer and let them watch American Idol and they will be happy. Our country in in very bad times when people will willingly give away liberty for a false sense of security!

You need to reread Heller. Justice Scalia tore apart the D.C. claim that because citizens could have rifles and shotguns that their "right to keep and bear arms" wasn't "infringed." He pointed out that handguns, especially semiautomatic handguns, are the citizens' weapon of choice for home and self-defense. That's what blew the D.C. handgun ban out of the water.
I am concerned about the possibility of a later court stacked with leftists by Obama or someone else revisiting Heller.

Our government officials should be more concerned with the issues at hand. Um let’s see… the economy, housing, our troops, our homeland, and our future. January 15, 2009, 11:40am (report abuse)I have a license to carry concealed.
It's relatively expensive to obtain such a license. Requiring it for all firearm owners means that the Second amendment only applies for those rich enough to afford the time and money required to jump through the hoops. Like many other rights, the average poor man needs this right just as much (or more) than I do.

January 16, 2009, 7:47am (report abuse)Doesn't shock me one bit. Obama has been hidding his dislike for firearms since he started his run for the presidency. This is a clear infringment on our 2nd amendment right that like most have already said, does nothing but try to disarm the law abiding citizens and give the thugs and gang bangers another law to disreguard. This makes me sick and what's worse is that we now have a president that will push crap like this down our throats for at least the next four years.

January 16, 2009, 11:19pm (report abuse)Mr. Rush, who is a former black panther, is introducing this bill to disarm the productive class (Middle America, Korean-American store owners, etc.) in order to make it vulnerable to Mr. Rush's gangbanger friends. To bad for Rush, this law is unenforcable and can be easily defied and ignored. Unfortunatly for people like Rush, his intentions are already known by his would be victims. Also, technological trends such as garage fablabs and future desktop fabricators will effectively make gun control completely obsolete.

Don't let the sleezy politicians and OBAMA take them away under the cover of crime reduction and public safety. January 17, 2009, 6:40pm (report abuse)This bill echoes many historical laws but all were part of totalitarian nations. Precedents include the Nazi Weapons Act of 1938 , the USSR in 1929, Turkey in 1911, Communist China in 1948, Uganda 1970, Cambodia 1975, and other oppressive dictatorships. A freely elected government responsible to a free, unoppressed citizenship does not fear guns in the hands of those citizens. It is only when the "leaders" become "rulers" that they establish gun laws such as this.

January 18, 2009, 1:59pm (report abuse)When are people going to realize that criminals do not care how many bills are passed about firearms? Criminals get guns illegally. Far too many guns enter this country illegally, which no one is addressing. Instead they keep trying to stop law-abiding citizens from owning guns for their own protection. They did this in the UK and the crime rate increased because the criminals knew they would not be confronted by any legally owned weapons. The Constitution allows US citizens to bear arms and if we are not very careful a handful of stupid politicians will take that away. Contact your legislators to let them know you are not in favor of such legislation that would further restrict gun ownership for law-abiding citizens. And then tell them to get a better of what is being shipped into our country via the docks and airports and vehicles from Mexico. And tell them to stop trying to rewrite the Constitution.
