February 10, 2009, 12:18pm (report abuse)This is an excellent move by our Federal Government to put all public safety employees on a level playing field.
There are many small minded communities that wrongly believe taht collective bargining will hurt their pocketbook. The truth is that giving your police and firefighters some control over their destiny will only serve increase their loyalty to the community and cement their relationship to their employer.
Please support HR 413. It may be the only hope some of us have at gaining a voice in our communities.

March 1, 2009, 5:54pm (report abuse)I have called the officers of Sen Kildee and Duncan this last week and asked when we can expect movement on the bill. They are both waiting for more co-sponsors and/or the senate to introduce a companion bill. Call and tell your Senator and Congressman to get with it. This bill is so important to those of us that don\'t a voice.

March 4, 2009, 12:51pm (report abuse)It is unfortunate that communities who do take care of their public safety employees and environment are lumped in with everyone else under the oversight of the Federal Government. Now, these communities will need to expend additional time, resources and money to manage this situation instead of on the community and its employees. This is just another example of the government usurping local authority and not allowing the community to decide what is best for its constituency. In the end this may well improve working conditions in some cities but will likely have the opposite effect in just as many, if not more.
Did I mention the resources that will also be expended to fight the constitutionality of this legislation?

March 15, 2009, 9:11pm (report abuse)Eventhough I'm currently working as an unpaid firefighter, I fought long and hard for HR980 (and it's companion Senate bill) only to have Sen De Mint (R) and Sen (R) Enze basically kil the bill by threatenning to stop all the business of the Senate if the measure wasn't stricken from the Farm Bill where it was an attchment. I did put both of those "gentlemen" on notice that their action would come back to haunt them when it came time for re-election. Unfortunately, De Mint was re-elected but, by a slim majority. I will be pressuring my elected politicians to sponsor this bill as well as having my Brothers and Sisters in the Fire Service to do the same. Please do not let it fail this time.

May 4, 2009, 9:50am (report abuse)I work for a small agency, and I am retired from another department. But some of our officers are young and this is their career. The current agency does not have a set salary scale or benefits package, these young officers have nothing to depend on. This legislation would establish equity for these officers

November 5, 2009, 10:02pm (report abuse)Collective bargaining, with the right to strike, for public employees like police and fire fighters, means that such employees can effectively hold a town hostage to wage demands. That's just wrong on principle. It's also one of the big reasons California is going -- or is -- bankrupt.

November 7, 2009, 10:44am (report abuse)Read the bill RPeterson, in particular the no-strike langauge.
Could you please provide some context to your Calif. remark. I believe you have no factual basis to make such a claim. If you do please share.
