The USCG is a relative bargain as far as US government agencies are concerned. They are very understaffed at 42,000 uniformed Coasties and grossly underfunded and have been for years. If I were the President, I would direct the Secretary of Homeland Security to double the funding request for the USCG. Their cutters, aircraft and other systems are in serious need of replacement and not just repair or overhaul.

These folks go in harm's way for the rest of us and we should all remember that.

Their motto is SEMPER PARATUS, "Always Ready" and they always have been despite having too little money and too few people.

God bless the men and women of the United States Coast Guard!

The U.S. Coast Guard is necessary and performs valuable servies for all the citizens. The men and women of the Coast Guard save lives and they go where many of us would not choose to go. In WW II they functioned as part of the U.S. Navy. They do good work.
