August 19, 2009, 4:21pm (report abuse)@DetnBur - Who says it's Americans? The "Global" part of "Global Warming" indicates otherwise. Americans can stop the problem in America. Just because China might not be doing anything about it, doesn't mean we shouldn't.
What science indicates a cooling trend? You observing a colder July is not science.
If you understand "Global Warming" you will see that it does not mean that some places won't get colder. In fact, "Global Warming" is a general climatic change which results in warmer warms and coolder colds. Overall, if you average global temperature, that is where the warming trend is apparent.
Your last argument doesn't make sense. In fact, if you knew the world was going to end in 10 years (not saying that it will) wouldn't you go into debt with an easier conscience since you would know you won't have to pay it off?
The Problem will not be solved
August 25, 2009, 11:33pm (report abuse)Whether global warming is real or not the "problem" won't be solved. These Carbon credits will shift around while businesses and citizens will continue have the same carbon footprint (because I don't know how to create a hydrogen car)... This is a scam, not because the problem isn't real, but because the problem will not be solved and money, power, and government will be created along the way.
The Problem won't be solved
August 25, 2009, 11:51pm (report abuse)Let's face facts, if the government puts a tracker box on my car to tax me for mileage, the fact of the matter is I'm still driving my car and putting "carbon emissions" in the air. Now I may not drive as much, but according to proponents of the bill its about living life and protecting the planet. When I stay in on a Friday night because I can't afford carbon taxes doesn't sound like living life... BTW 10 out of every 1000 people in china own cars while 760 out of 1000 people in the US own cars... so there is a lot of room for carbon in china let alone India, Russia, and Brazil. Also the world will end in 10 years meaning our standard of living will go down the crap hole, by examples for which I gave earlier.

(logged in user) September 3, 2009, 2:48am (report abuse)Here we go again with Congress over stepping their power. There is nothing in our Constitution that grants them the authority to even consider a bill such and this.
The power to decide issues concerning interstate commerce of any kind is reserved for the individual State governments.
Maybe we should all chip-in and buy our esteemed Representatives a few night courses in civics? They are to uphold and support the Constitution of the United States, I think it's only fair to require them to read it.

September 9, 2009, 8:21am (report abuse)I believe this bill should be passed. Of course, I am just a 16 year old kid and have no idea the cost and affect, but still. I have seen the movie "Home", which all of you should watch. This world has been subject to our abuse and we will suffer consequences unless we do something about it. Like I said, I do not understand the full effect but I do understand the life I want my own children to live. TheLuke, thank you for your information and I wish the best for you. But really, what does arguing do but only to feed the ego...

(logged in user) September 10, 2009, 8:51pm (report abuse)$12,000 from every citizen! Who is responsible for these emissions? Let's have them pay for it. Tax the companies who pollute.
I don't get it why companies pollute the land, the air, and the rivers, yet the public has to clean it up. Just like the Obama bank bailout plan the public is burdened with the rick and corporations reap the profits.
This is just an excuse to create yet another commodity to trade, namely CO2. Pretty soon you have to pay for the air your breath!

(logged in user) September 10, 2009, 9:07pm (report abuse)Put a federal tax on electricity. 30 cents a KWh after the first 500 KWh of use every month for residences and 10 cents a KWh after the first 1000 KWh for corporations. Let my neighbor run his air conditioner all day in the summer, heat his pool in the winter and splash about in his Jacuzzi with his mistress all he wants when his wife's away.
Oh, and while you are at it instead of subsidizing coal, have the companies restore the landscape they destroy to it's original pristine condition and clean the slurry they produce or tax them $3000 per ton of coal they produce. That, there will take care of the deficit!
