IF this is passed it will upset those we trade with by giving USA automakers an unfair advantage. In turn they will pass similar laws in their countries and thus the only thing that will happen is I will be taxed so someone who can't afford a car can buy a new one. No thanks.

Oh Brent, you are already being taxed so someone who can't afford to buy a house can buy a new one, why not a car as well?

i have a 1992 thunderbird V-8.....gas gusler????? you bet it is.....what we paid in gasoline a year ago was just plain robbery. We are ready to get a new car!

We are ready to buy today, but don't want to pull the trigger if doing so prevents us from securing a voucher. When will the Act go forward for a vote?! Would the voucher be retroactive if the purchase is recent enough to the passing of the act?

You people who want this to pass are shameless. By all means, don't worry about our state's existing deficit. Instead, go buy a new car that will be subsidized by the state (and therefore, the taxpayer) for your own personal gain. All Washingtonian's reading this should realize that the state should only spend on what it can afford, and while you're at it, apply this philosophy to your own individual budgets.

This is what the should have been done instead of the bailout. The government wasted all those billions. Rebates were was a good idea six months ago. Now it is just another waste of tax dollars.

Are you serious? We've nationalized the automotive industry and now we're going to fork over more money to allow people to buy a new car?

It's just wrong.

Seems that if this bill gets gas guzzling clunkers off the roads for good and incentivizes new fuel efficient car purchases lots of folks and our planet will benefit.

It's unfortunate that the vouchers will only be good for purchases made after July 1, 2009. Since I already purchased a fuel efficient car (50 MPG), in June 2009, to replace my gas guzzling SUV (15 MPG)...I unfortunately won't qualify for the program. It seems that the program should encourage folks like me to help the environment ... instead I feel let down with the last minute date changes (it was March 31, 2009 until recently). Since I can't get a $4500 voucher for scrapping my old SUV, I will sell it to someone else who will keep driving it and guzzling more gas :-(

I can see the used car ads now;
"Buy this 1989 Lincoln clunker [Blue Book value $750] for $2,000 and use it for a $4,500 voucher."

I would like to buy a fuel efficient, decent American made vehicle. Unfortunately Ford will not sell their diesel hybrids in the U.S. and American car makers cannot compete with Toyota and Honda. Pass the bill and I'll buy my new Toyota or Honda.

This is not what the government is supposed to be doing. Taking from one group of people to be to another. Let capitalism rule the day. If GM goes under, then they go under, if they survive then,, but either way it will have been in the best interest of our economy. It will have allowed the makret forces to drive supplier and customer behavior. If US automaker do not make cars that compete, then they will only improve if they now they need to. They'll only know they need to if thier start losing sales, when competititors gain sales. If they recact positively then we all benefit. IF they don't then we do business with those that do. It is captialism. That is what we need to get out of this ecomonic mess. Get teh gov't out of the way. Remove teh laws that forces poor decisions on the businesses that led the way into this slump.

This is not Government's job, to be assisting people to make private purchases. It will only drive up the price of cars by the amount of the vouchers! Then what will the Government do? Impose price restrictions? Create another new agency? Why doesn't government just lower taxes on individuals and businesses? Then we can all prosper and we can all afford new cars! The more Government gets involved, the more they screw everything up!

I have worked hard all of my life and it has been 20 years since I purchased an actual new car. In 2002 I purchased a very fuel efficient and road worthy 2000 Ford Escort,a leased car. It had 19005 miles on it and now has just over 65000 miles on it. I dodn't waste fuel!! I thought this act was already passed. I purchased a new KIA Spectra on 6/6/2009. Now I find out I am not eligible for the voucher. At least this bill should allow tax payers who have purchased a new car since Jan. 1,
2009 to receive this credit. As a single tay payer I get shafted because I pay more taxes that a person who qualifies as head of house hold. The GOOD GUYS never seem to win! I actually know a person, actually a family member, who gets medical, food, and bill relief through "Welfare" based programs. When asked why she doesn't work to pay her own way her response is " It's not my style to work" She's 58 years old and hasn't worked for 30 years.

Want a laugh? I have driven a fuel efficient car, Ford Escort, for 7 years. It was an out of lease car. I am averaging between 25 and 35 MPh town and highway.
I don't qualify for the purchase voucher because my car is too fuel efficient and doesn't qualify. I guess if I was a gas hog and used a lot of gas I could get the voucher. Here I am, using good sense and driving a "GOOD" car and I am shut out of the voucher. I have spent my life as a good tax payer and a responsible person, and this is the way my government rewards me. "You don't qualify" because you have been doing the right , responsible, non- gas guzzling thing for years and this is your reward " Sucker ". Maybe if I was a leech with my hand out to the government, a criminal, a me-first type of person, or some other type of irresponsible person I would be important to the government when they pass out the "goodies".
