January 8, 2009, 11:12pm (report abuse)It is not the job of the government to establish health insurance for its citizens.

January 21, 2009, 12:44pm (report abuse)We need to stop framing this debate as nationalized health insurance and instead view it as basic human decency. How can we possibly accept that as the richest country in the nation, we cannot provide basic health SERVICES for our citizens?
Did you know that fire protection services used to be a private affair? That's right, the government didn't provide a fire department, you had to contract out with private fire fighting companies. However, our forebearers saw that this was more effective if provided as a public service through the government instead of private enterprise. How is basic health care any less important to a nation?
A healthy population is a productive population!

January 21, 2009, 9:08pm (report abuse)A productive population is a population which can afford to buy health insurance if they deem that it is fit for their circumstances.
You hit the nail on the head, health care is a SERVICE and not a right as some misguided presidents would have us believe.
The problem is that people "feel" that just because they exist they are "entitled" to the services that someone else provides. Well I think that massages are nice and I don't like to pay for them so I should get one on the governments dime.
The last thing this country needs is another entitlement program. Do you have any idea how much debt this country is carrying already. A national health care tax would cripple this country.
If people want health insurance buy it... period. If you don't buy it and something happens don't come crying to us about how you are so unfortunate.
Be responsible for your own livelyhood. If you can't afford health insurance on your current job, and you think you need it get another

February 2, 2009, 9:11am (report abuse)Did anyone read to the end, and see how they plan to fund it? They wish to impose a 5% value added tax to pay for it! For all of you willing to accept government "services" for everything, good luck in the future if you think you'll be able to afford your life style any longer...

February 15, 2009, 4:29am (report abuse)I have read many comments about if someone wants better health care, and they can't afford it then they should get another job so they can afford to pay for better insurance. Just look around. How many of you know families who are now without jobs, income, or health insurance. I don't know the meat of this bill to know if the current proposal is the appropriate answer, but universal health care is a need of our society. A healthy society is a more productive society. If we are able to prevent illness with a prevention based health care plan, we will save Medicare millions maybe billions of dollars. More individuals will still be productive members of society at age 65 and will be contributing to our GDP instead of being a suck on our resources, but we need to prevent their chronic illnesses first. When we provide basic preventative services, everyone wins, and our tax base grows.

February 25, 2009, 12:22pm (report abuse)RN-Oregon:
Don't you see the flaws of your own arguments, you are claiming that we will save medicare billions. Why is the government involved in issuing medicare to in the first place. medicare is another ponzi scheme like social security.
The proposals that have been made would put government in charge of deciding who gets treatment and who doesn't, I think it should be doctors and payments.
The idea that by putting the government in charge of health care will make us a more productive, healthy society is a completely fallacious argument. When we get things for free and on the cheap we used them without regard to their cost (its called supply and demand).
The goverment has no place in health care. It is the responsibility of the citizens to take care of themselves! health care is NOT a right.

April 2, 2009, 10:29pm (report abuse)I will have to say I agree with “Freedom First” 100% of the way. I don’t think there is much I can add but just to say we as Americans have a “right to pursue happiness” not the right to happiness. If you feel you need insurance to make you happy, then that is something you yourself need to pursue, not something government needs to give to you. Maybe you can claim that right in another country but not under the U.S. Constitution.

June 18, 2009, 10:44pm (report abuse)Thank God the votes from this poll, at least, are strongly against this act. I don't even have words for how bad an idea this is. Please, everyone who votes on this site, write your congressman like I did and express your opinion!

August 4, 2009, 4:20pm (report abuse)5% VAT coming + a soda tax + the tobacco tax that "takes care" of the S-CHIP program and pretty soon this whole notion of "If you make less than $250,000 per year, you will not see you taxes go up one dime...Not one dime." look exactly like what the republicans were calling it. A LIE

August 12, 2009, 4:05am (report abuse)How will compliance be enforced? They want to "prevent illness", specifically cited are diabetes and heart disease...commonly caused by obesity...How are they going to enforce weight loss programs? Think about it...

August 13, 2009, 8:06pm (report abuse)Some folks need to stop being so reactionary. The idea that government involvement is always bad is simplistic and incorrect. Folks that subscribe to the "everyone is on their own" philosophy and that there are infinite choices avialable to all of us will not be at all helpful in this process due to their basic selfishness and limited appreciation of community. I'm not sure that we as a nation are ready for HR 15 yet. If any reform is passed, it will likely and appropriately be a hybrid. Detractors are living in a fantasy world where freedom's just a another word for screw everybody else.
