I am a Federal employee. I hope this never passes. If you want kids thats your business and at your expense. If you have the sick leave use it after that its on you. If you can't afford it perhaps you should consider that before you have the child in the first place. I go one better , we will give you the same amount of time and pay that they give the employees at Wal Martfor maternity leave . After all if its good enough for the largest private employer in the US it should be good enough for The federal employee as well....

C, Please tell me which agency is giving admin time to go to the gym, I want to hire on there. BTW, I think Gov workers are paid well and the "conditions of our jobs" are excellent.

Libby, If you wanted unlimmited sick leave you should have stayed active duty. If you can't save up a few weeks sick leave in as a federal employee somethings wrong.

Don, I'm with you, taxpayers should not have to pay people to reproduce....

Are you friggin kidding me don? Most of us fed employees have served our country both in the military and the civil service, worked crazy hours and overtime (with no extra pay I may add), never taken a handout, been on welfare, etc. Excuse me that after 10 years of giving my life to serve our great country I would like to have a child and not have to take out a loan to pay my bills while I recover from childbirth. Almost all civilian companies pay for some maternity leave now, its time for the government to catch up!...

Don … how about a little compassion. The tax payers already pay Gov employees to take time off … for vacations (annual leave), to go to the gym (admin leave), for holidays (holiday leave), when they are traveling (travel compensation) and when they are sick (sick leave). This would just be another category of time off. Do you know how hard it is to have a baby? Seriously, I’m not being sarcastic. Aside from the physical demands, child birth is expensive. Gov workers are underpaid and the conditions of our jobs are well below the standards set by many private sector jobs. Paid maternity leave is also a benefit many private sector jobs provide. This benefit would help equal the balance. And just like taxes already go to a variety of services some of us will never benefit from … it’s for the greater good....

What is with all you whiners? Why should the tax paying public pay for you to take time off? Get Real. Nobody owes you a living or support while you reproduce. I hope this bill never sees the light of day....

Yeah, I'm 7 months now... wasn't pregnant when I started monitoring this. I feel like a second rate citizen. Especially when you hear the talk about how beneficial it is for the mother to stay with the baby early on. Unfortunately, I can't get a new job now. But I guarentee I will not work for the government for my second child....

My co-worker just had a baby. She didn't think she had anything to worry about because of the leave advance and leave share options. However, her leave advance was denied (as we learned they frequently are). Additionally, Health Care benefits are not taken out of shared leave. Instead, the agency pays it which will require her to pay back the agency when she returns. So assuming she got enough donated leave to cover her maturnity leave she'll have a bill when she returns to work!

Let's pray that these federal employees don't have a bad pregnancy requiring them to stay home from work frequently or be on bed rest for too long. Why do we continue to push women into poverty? Isn't it bad enough that most lower end GS position qualify the person for public assistance?!?!

PLEASE PASS THIS BILL & SOON!...

It about drove us to the poor house when my wife had a baby while employeed for the Fed's. She had a normal pregnancy but with all the appointments and delivery time she used her leave in no time at all. Luckily where I worked I got paternity leave. But how messed up is that, the father gets paid time off, but the mother who is doing the actual work doesn't?!?!...

Keep in mind that when a woman is pregnant she will need more time off than just for the delivery. A typical pregnancy will require about 13 visits to the OB. It is also necessary for dental and vision appointments during pregnancy. Most times some form of leave will need to be used for her to make these appointments. Depending on the lenght for each appointment it is very possible for her to use a weeks worth of leave just in doctors appointments. Not to mention the occasional day off due to morning sickness or illness it is feasable for her to use 2 weeks leave before she even delivers the baby.

I just don't know why this legislation hasn't been passed already and I don't see how any female federal employee has been able to afford to have a baby! Our wages aren't exactly the best!...
